Department of Family Medicine

At present the Department includes programs in medical student education, faculty development, research and consultation services in primary care facilities in and around Kuching.

The Department of Family Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak is led by Dr. Syed Alwi bin Syed Abdul Rahman. The department was founded as an independent department in 2005, but existed prior to that as a unit of the Department of Medicine.

The Department’s participates mainly in the fourth year medical programme of the medical curriculum.

The Department is actively involved in research especially in clinical and educational research either in collaboration with on-campus colleagues as well as with colleagues at other esteemed institutions. The department also provides research opportunities for its academicians.


The Department of Family Medicine, guided by the principles of Family Medicine*, is dedicated to advancing patient-centered healthcare through our programs in education, research and clinical service.

To provide continuing, comprehensive medical care, health maintenance and preventive services to each member of the family regardless of sex, age or type of problem, be it biological, behavioral or social. Family Medicine is patient centered, evidence based, family focused and problem oriented. (Phillips and Haynes, "The Domain of Family Practice: Scope, Role and Function", Fam Med 2001;33(4):273-7)

  • Provide and maintain a department faculty and infrastructure that successfully supports academic and clinical achievement
  • Provide outstanding, innovative medical education, having as its emphasis prevention, wellness, management of common problems, and patient-centered health care, in the context of Family Medicine
  • Provide clinical and educational research and scholarly activity to improve the health of patients, families and communities and advance the discipline of Family Medicine.
  • Provide patient-centered care that expresses the values of Family Medicine and promotes access to high quality, cost effective, primary care services
