The aim of this program is to produce a medical doctor who should fulfill the following objectives:


  • acquire a sound knowledge of applied basic medical sciences in obstetrics and gynaecology
  • achieve the skill of history taking in obstetrics and gynaecology
  • be able to competently carry out physical examination and make a correct diagnosis in obstetrical and gynaecological patients
  • be able to manage the common obstetrical and gynaecological disorders
  • learn the various aspects of preventive medicine and health screening which are relevant to woman's health
  • recognize the important role of a woman in the family, community and society at large
  • establish a proper patient-doctor relationship:- i.e. to be able to formulate patients problems in an understanding and emphatic manner with respect to their dignity and individually in order to accept their participation in decisions of their medical care
  • establish effective professional ethics, self-discipline and interpersonal relationships with continuous concern to privacy, comfort and well-being of patients
  • develop an interest in research and journal reading in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology such that the students will continua to upgrade their knowledge beyond short span of medical education
  • be able to critically analyze articles published in the obstetrics and gynaecology journals

Message from Head of Department


The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology [O&G] of Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UNIMAS is pleased to response to your inquiry. Our O&G educational program emphasizes the total development of highly competent doctors who will be an integral part of the community and will be sensitive to its need. The program strives to promote the learning of the biological aspects of women health and disease. It will endeavour to inculcate in our students high moral and ethical values, and will train them to be versatile in the art of effective communication. These qualities will be achieved through an innovative, broad-based, student-centered, problem-based educational program, which is community oriented, and achieves as a balance between the art and science of medicine.

The department supports the Nursing Program and Master of Public Health. It also provides and strengthens the O&G services at Sarawak General Hospital and Sebayor Medical Centre.

The department input in the Medical Program starts in the second year and continues to fifth year. The clinical O&G educational programme is divided into three clinical clerkships.

  1. Third Year at Sibu Hospital, Sibu (8 weeks)
  2. Fourth Year at Serian District Hospital (2 weeks incorporated into the District Hospital Posting)
  3. Fifth Year at Sarawak General Hospital, Kuching (8 weeks)

The teaching learning methods used to deliver the O&G eduational programme during the clinical clerkship include lectures, problem based learning sessions, seminars, ward rounds, case presentations, morning case discussions and small group bedside teaching.
