SYNOPSIS

This course consists of six topics. Topic One is dealed withOptical Fiber Waveguides. It is enhanced the student knowledge about the application of ray theory and electromagnetic theory into optical fiber and introduce fundamental characteristic of single mode fiber as a waveguide. Transmission Characteristics of Optical Fibers is addressed in Topic Two where the ray propagation behaviour in single mode fiber is itemized. The factors that degrade the signal propagation performance are described briefly. These include key phenomena such as attenuation, loss caused by material, scattering, bending and dispersion. Topic Three is explained the physical characteristicof Optical Fibers and Cables. It is involved single mode fiber,multimode fiber and plastic fiber cabling. The reliability and fiber strengthen affect the stability of the transmission characteristics into different environments such as nuclear radiation exposure and transoceanic transmission are elaborated.Topic Four is dedicated to Optical Fiber Connection: Joint and Couplers. Under this topic, type of joints and couplers are explained briefly together with the equipment that is used for jointing. Topic Five portrays Optical Fiber Systems correspond to system design consideration based on power budget calculation. Topic Six is Optical Fiber Measurements concern onto how the measurement of important parameters could be done at field using specific equipment such as Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR)
