COURSE TITLE

BLOOD & IMMUNOLOGY BLOCK / BLOK DARAH & IMUNOLOGI

COURSE CODE

MDP10307

SYNOPSIS

Block 3 comprises 2 units : Blood and Immunology. The philosophy of the teaching during the block is based on the problem-based learning (PBL) method and integrated teaching. The immunology unit introduces students to the principles of the innate immunity and specific immunity, and relates such knowledge to disease processes. The block also provides an understanding of the normal functions of blood, and the central role played by blood and blood-derived cells in many aspects of human metabolism. The biological, behavioural, population and clinical strands will be integrated into each unit. This will form the basic foundation of the student's future training in the approach to clinical problems. The blood unit is divided into 4 subunits: composition of blood and haemopoiesis , erythrocyteand haemoglobin , haemostasis, blood transfusion. Eachunit/subunit is built on important clinical problem as trigger forthe PBL. The basic sciences contents which relate to clinical medicine are accorded special emphasis. As such, clinical exposure will continue to be a feature in this block. Much of the'abnormal' (e.g. haemolytic anaemia, haematologicalmalignancies, etc.) have been left out from this block, but willhave to be covered during Phase II of the curriculum.
