SYNOPSIS

The Musculoskeletal Block deals with the Musculoskeletal System and structures in the head and neck. The Musculoskeletal System is concerned with the study of muscles, bones, and its joints, along with blood vessels, lymphatic, and nerves.This Block will involve the study of upper limb, lower limb, and the spine; and the vertebral column where there are major nerves and vessels, bones, and joints. In addition, their embryonic development and congenital anomalies, such as amelia,meromelia, syndactylism, and spina bifida will be dealt with.The head and neck region will also be involved, along with the structures and functions of other parts of the head and neck region, except the ear and eye.

The philosophy of teaching applied to this block is based on the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method and integrated teaching; with the PBL sessions allotted twice a week.The basic or essential medical subjects, such as Anatomy,Biochemistry, Physiology Histology, Embryology,Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Pathology will be studied together with the clinical disciplines, such as Medicine, Surgery,and Orthopaedics, wherever applicable. The radiology of bonesand joints, and physiotherapy of orthopaedic patients are also anecessary part of the study. It is hoped that students will gain theknowledge on drug therapy related to the Musculoskeletal System, and be able to study the topics in an integrated manner.There will be a Continuous Assessment in the form of shortquizzes (MCQ ).End of block examination in the form of MCQ ,MEQ, and Objective structured practical examination (OSPE))will be held from 9th March to 11th March 2011. End-of Year 1 Examination (Summative Assessment for all year I Blocks) will be held from 23th May to 27th May 2011.
