SYNOPSIS

Endocrinology is study about intercellular chemical communication. Endocrine system uses hormones, the chemical messengers produced by the ductless glands to convey information to target cells through circulation. Some of the hormones are amines, and others are amino acids, polypeptides,proteins or steroids. Hormones regulate metabolic processes that are all the chemical and energy transformations that occur in our body. In Endocrinology block the study is about communication systems and information transfer. It covers biochemistry,molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, cell physiology and behaviour associated with chemical communication. Study of Endocrinology is one of the most dynamic centers of the biomedical sciences, not only for the basic scientists but also for practitioners and paramedical professions.

Basic and clinical endocrinology has a wide scope. Endocrine system is very interesting and has enormous links with all the other systems you are going to study in years to come.During the six?week course of this block, main focus will be on the classical or main endocrine glands and their specific hormones. Normal function and disorders of pituitary, thyroid, parathyroids,pancreas and adrenals will be studied.The design of the biological strand for this block has been to discuss general anatomy, histology,embryology and pathology of the glands. Synthesis and release of hormones and their physiological and biochemical basis of actions, role of hormones in metabolism along with underlying physiological and biochemical mechanisms of action, will form another important aspect of the study. Emphasis will also begiven to the therapeutic and/or diagnostic uses of the natural andsemi-synthetic hormones. Effects of various endocrine disorders on general growth, behavior and personality will be dealt with in the behavioral strand.

Biochemical changes occur during metabolism of various foods and some common inborn errors of metabolism, will be covered in this block. With this in view, it is necessary to revise geneexpression as well as protein synthesis. Nutritional needs,constituents of a healthy diet and malnutrition and its effects arethe topics included in nutrition. Application of the basic knowledge obtained to the clinical endocrinology requires revising the material before going to the clinics. Students are therefore strongly advised to follow closely the handouts on the programme and activities so as to have maximum benefit from the clinical exposure. Efforts are being made to arrange maximum endocrine cases for the students. However, if due to any reason a particular case is not available during a scheduled week, it will be presented as and when it becomes available.
