COURSE TITLE

DISTRICT HOSPITAL AND FAMILY MEDICINE POSTING / PENEMPATAN HOSPITAL AND DAERAH DAN PERUBATAN KELUARGA

COURSE CODE

MDP40408

SYNOPSIS

This posting is of 8 weeks duration and for this academic session Family Medicine is incorporated in it. It will be conducted mainly in Serian Hospital, Klinik Kesihatan Jalan Masjid, Klinik Kesihatan Kota Sentosa, Klinik Kesihatan Kota Samarahan and the general practitioner's clinics around Kuching. After the end of the third week, the students will go back to Kuching to do their posting in Family Medicine in the GP or the polyclinics for another 4 weeks before their end of posting exams on the 8th week. It is designed to provide students with knowledge and experience of working in a district hospital, polyclinic and general practitioner's clinics.Students should not only learn about inpatient and out patient care in the hospital, primary health care in the community, the bridging activities of the hospital out reach services and the public health promotion and protection activities that underpin all the others, but they should also understand the links between them; that is, the kaleidoscope of care for the health of the people in that area. When students understand the possibilities and limitations of all of these parts of the health care system, they will know how to use this network effectively to improve the health of the community. This series of postings emphasizes the acquisition of clinical skills in this wide range of settings. The master of Family Medicine is more than the learning of a certain core of information. The things that make a family doctor different are their values, attitudes and methods-the principles that govern their action.- Prof Ian Mc Whinney

Family doctors must possess a sound knowledge of pathophysiology, clinical medicine, behavioural science and epidemiology. More importantly they must be able to integrate this knowledge in the context of family and society to effectively respond to the health care needs of their patients. Family doctors

are committed to people, not to groups of diseases or to particular body of knowledge. This is what separates Family Medicine from other specialties. Hence, the last decade has seen a conscious effort to shift the focus of undergraduate education towards the community and thus locations are often ambulatory Care settings at primary care level.

In Serian Hospital, students will be divided into small groups and allocated to the 4 wards i.e. male, female, maternity and children.Students will also be divided into 4 groups again where they are posted to OPD, pharmacy and physiotherapy unit by rotation in the morning two to three times a week. The major disciplines involved in the teachings are Family Medicine, Medicine,Surgery, O&G and Paediatrics. There will also be contributions from Orthopedics, Psychiatry and Community Medicine.

In Kuching, students in small groups will be posted in rotation at the government polyclinics and general practitioner'sclinics, where there are a significant number of patients seeking medical care for acute and chronic non-medical emergency problems. Students will be exposed to variety of patients seen inprimary care clinics either in the polyclinics or generalpractitioner's clinics. They will have the opportunity to observe or participate and learn about the differences in approaches and management in a primary care setting.
