SYNOPSIS

The broad goal of this course is to promote awareness,understanding and knowledge of persons with learning disabilities and to enhance advocacy for their rights,independence, real choices and inclusion in society.

It emphasizes on the social model of disability and covers the underlying concepts, principles, historical development, theory and current practice, and international and national recommendations of support for persons with learning disabilities, for example, Valuing People (2001), relevant National Service Frameworks, disability discrimination and human rights legislation, the development of anti-oppressive practice and the People with Disabilities Act (Malaysia) 2008.

It is organized around an ecological framework, with class sessions focusing on theory and practice at the individual, group,community, organization, and policy levels, and practical sessions of working with persons/children with learning disabilities.

Participants will be exposed to the common learning disabilities and their characteristics, for example, Down syndrome, Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, slow learning, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and gifted learners. Attention will also be given to the screening, assessment, behaviour modification and intervention strategies commonly employed.

Classes will combine lectures, discussions, small group exercises, movie reviews and field visits to non-governmental organizations catering to the needs of persons with learning disabilities, with some sessions featuring invited speakers.

(Kursus ini bermatlamat untuk meningkatkan kesedaran,kefahaman dan pengetahuan tentang orang-orang dengan masalah-masalah pembelajaran, di samping menggerak kanadvokasi untuk hak-hak mereka serta keupayaan berdikari,pilihan sebenar dan inklusi dalam masyarakat.

Ia menekan kepada model ketidakupayaan bersifat sosial dan merangkumi konsep-konsep asas, prinsip-prinsip, perkembangan sejarah, teori dan praktis semasa, serta usul-usul kebangasaan dan antarabangsa untuk sokongan orang-orang bermasalah pembelajaran, contohnya, Valuing People (Menghargai Orang)(2001), rangka-rangka perkhidmatan kebangsaan yang relevan,undang-undang diskriminasi ketidakupayaan dan hak-hakmanusia, perkembangan praktis anti-tindas dan Akta untuk Orang-Orang dengan Ketidakupayaan (Malaysia) 2008.

Ia dilaksanakan ala rangka ekologi, dengan sesi-sesi kelas yang menekan kepada teori dan praktis pada aras individu, kumpulan,masyarakat, organisasi dan polisi, dan sesi-sesi praktis melalui kerja-kerja lapangan dengan orang-orang/kanak-kanakbermasalah pembelajaran.

Peserta-peserta akan didedahkan kepada masalah-masalahpembelajaran yang umum serta ciri-cirinya, seperti, SindromDown, masalah kekurangan perhatian/hiperaktiviti, lembam,disleksia, dispraksia, diskalkulia dan pelajar-pelajar pintar-cerdas. Perhatian akan diberikan kepada strategi-strategi saringan, pentaksiran, modifikasi tingkahlaku dan intervensi yang biasa dilaksanakan.

Kelas-kelas akan menggabungan teknik-teknik kuliah,perbincangan, latihan dalam kumpulan kecil,pengimbasan/tinjauan tayangan gambar dan lawatan sambil belajar ke organisasi-organisasi bukan-kerajaan untuk orang/kanak-kanak dengan masalah pembelajaran, dengan beberapa sesi dijalankan oleh penceramah-penceramah jemputan.)
