This is a full time programme that prepares medical doctors for the Master of Public Health and Doctor of Public Health (Dr PH) degrees. On successful completion of the first year programme the candidate is awarded the Master of Public Health degree. During the following three years the programme prepares the graduates for the Dr PH degree. Guidance will be provided by experienced, dedicated and qualified lecturers to ensure that the candidates are kept in touch with innovative, up to date developments in public health-related issues and community based developments.

The MPH programme is divided into two components, each defining a specific functional area of study. The components are : Core and Research Project. The core component contains core courses which are compulsory for all students of Master of Public Health. The courses provide background knowledge and skills in public health which are required for any public health expert.  

The Research Project component comprises a series of research related courses and a research project. The project requires students to demonstrate and present a critical approach to specific issues of public health matters. To complete the MPH programme, a candidate must accummulate 34 credit hours of Core Components, and 6 credit hours of Research Project. The Dr. PH program comprises 78 credit hours of course work and 30 credit hours dedicated to research. This program spans over a period of three years.

The degrees awarded are :

MPH ( General ) - 1 year
 Dr. PH ( Health Promotion ) - 3 years

Entry Requirement

MPH Program

Malaysian applicant

  • Possesses a degree of MBBS/MD or other equivalent undergraduate medical qualification from an institution recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
  • At least one (1) year of post-full registration of clinical experience certified by the relevant authorities (3 years post graduation).
  • Candidate must be registered with the MMC and possess a valid Annual Practicing Certificate (APC).

International applicant

  • Possesses a degree of MBBS/MD or other equivalent undergraduate medical qualification from an institution recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
  • Qualifies for registration under the Medical Practitioner Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia.
  • At least three (3) years of post-full registration of clinical experience certified by the relevant authorities.
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with minimum score of 7.0. 

Other requirements

For Malaysian applicant, they must pass the interview conducted by the university

Tuition Fees

    Malaysian students : RM 3,450.00
     International students : RM 9,775.00 (approximately USD 3,250.00)

 

DR PH Program

Candidate must possess the following qualifications

  1. Candidate possess MPH degree from UNIMAS or other institutions of higher learning approved by the Senate.
  2. Pass the entrance examination.
  3. Registered with the Malaysian Medical Council ( for local students )
  4. English proficiency with at least IELTS band 6.0.
  5. Tuition fees for international students : RM15,577.00 or USD4,400.00

Program Schedule

  1. Intake is once a year, normally in September of every year.
  2. Course type : MPH - Course work and Project. Dr PH - Course work, Field Posting and Research.
  3. Work burden : MPH - Course work ( 34 credit hours ) and research project ( 6 credit hours ).
  4. Dr PH - Course work ( 78 credit hours ) and research project ( 30 credit hours )

How long has FHMS, UNIMAS offered the MPH and Dr. PH programmes ?
- The MPH programme started in June 2004 and the Dr. PH programme started in June 2009.

When is the intake ?
