61 61 The Malaria Research Centre (MRC) was established as one of the two Centres of Excellence by UNIMAS in January 2006. This was in recognition of the major contributions to malaria research by Prof Balbir Singh, Prof Janet Cox-Singh and co-researchers at the Malaria Research Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. These two scientists joined UNIMAS in 1999 to establish laboratory-based research in the new Medical Faculty and with financial support from UNIMAS, they were instrumental in designing and equipping state-of-the-art research laboratories. The acquisition of research grants from UNIMAS, the Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment and the Wellcome Trust enabled them to train young scientists and establish an active group of researchers working on malaria.

68 68 The Centre for Water Research (CWR) at UNIMAS has been formally established as a Centre of Excellence in January 2006. It’s an offshoot of what was before an informal grouping of researchers from the Faculty of Resource Science & Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation at UNIMAS. The main function of CWR is to promote, activate and coordinate all water related research and consultancy at this university.

75 75 Over the last 15 years information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been increasingly and optimistically promoted as a means of transforming developing countries into “modern” and knowledgebased societies and to alleviate some of the social and economic problems of developing world, particularly those in rural areas. Yet very little is known about the veracity of these aspirations, much less about the long-term social and economic effects of these technologies upon societies both in urban and rural areas.

89 89 The Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy was established in 2009 to strengthen and rationalise the UNIMAS research, demonstration and development efforts in all renewable energy technologies. CoERE is dedicated to accelerate the deployment and grid integration of renewable energy and low carbon generation technology through the utilization of Wind, Tidal Wave, Biomass, Hydro Power, Solar PV and Solar Thermal energy. As we step into this new era, there are high technological demand for ecology, energy saving, resources, and preservation of environment. Development of technologies for alternative energy for the reduction of energy consumption is an emergent issue.
