SYNOPSIS

This course explores basic concepts in two interrelated fields, deviance and criminology, and the related research methods and ethical issues. It discusses the social construction of deviance and various theories of crime causation and criminalization including biological, psychological, sociological, and cultural theories. The course also examines crime in relation to individuals, society, capitalist development, modernization, ethnic and gender relations. Students will also be exposed to issues in criminal justice and the roles of police, courts and corrections centers.

(Kursus ini meneliti konsep-konsep asas dalam dua bidang yang berkait rapat, devian dan kriminologi serta metod penyelidikan dan isu-isu etika yang berkaitan. Kursus ini membincangkan devian dari perspektif konstruksi sosial dan kejenayahan daripada beberapa teori termasuk teori biologi, teori psikologi, teori sosiologi dan teori budaya lencongan. Kursus ini juga meneliti jenayah dan hubungannya dengan individu, masyarakat, pembangunan kapitalis, modenisasi, hubungan etnik dan gender. Para pelajar akan didedahkan kepada isu-isu keadilan jenayah dan peranan pihak polis, mahkaman dan pusat-pusat pemulihan/tahanan.)
