CAPTIVE ANIMAL MANAGEMENT (Pengurusan Haiwan Kurungan)

STH3033

SYNOPSIS

The first unit deals with the scope and concept of captive animal management including how it differs from management of livestock and pets. The second unit deals with breeding strategies and reproductive manipulation of captive animals stressing on the need to retain the genetic characteristics of wild population, importance of record keeping and avoidance of inbreeding. The third unit describes the different feed resources and how these are managed. It includes feeding programs for different types of animals and provision of balance diet. The final part of the course deals with recognition of healthy and unhealthy animals, major diseases and their control and examples of herd health management programs. This course includes experiential learning whereby students spend a weekend helping at a captive facility.
