HOW-TO : Run Application as Service in Ubuntu 14.04 using SystemV

Make sure that you follow the following steps while adding/creating new service in ubuntu.

  1. Create the service file in /etc/init.d/<service name>

    sudo ln -s /opt/youapp.jar /etc/init.d/<service name>

  2. Set permission for the  service

    sudo chmod 700 /etc/init.d/<service name>

  3. Update RC file for automatic start-up during bootup

    sudo update-rc.d <service name> defaults sudo update-rc.d <service name> enable

  4. Now you can view your service using this command :

    sudo service --status-all
